"if you say go"
a new way to walk that's crazy beautiful
church of the apostles (a.k.a. "cota" or just apostles) is a new church, not only in "years in existence," but in mindset. we seek to be a real and authentic community, at home in today's culture and in our fremont neighborhood as 'artisans of a new humanity.'
each person on this planet is on some kind of path. sometimes we don't take time to think about the directions our lives are headed in, why we're goin' where we're goin', why we're doin' what we're doin', and what for.
some people are headed upstream, but get screwed up without a paddle.
some are moving in circles, stuck repeating old patterns and destructive ways.
some are on a downward spiral, on course to "crash and burn."
some are runnin' up a down staircase, using lots of energy, but to no real purpose.
some of us are in stasis, so slammed by life that there's no power to move.
some feel there's a spiritual path or force, but don't know god with a name.
so what else is new? the same stuff was going on thousands of years ago when a man named jesus crossed paths with people who were headed in all sorts of directions. he met them where they were at, and while they were headin' where they were headin,' and said to each one "come, follow me."
there was something about him and the outrageous honesty in the kind of life he was living that caused some people to change whatever course they were on to walk with him. basically, they heard god's voice in his words, felt god's love in his actions, risked their hearts on him and simply >got up and went<. in church talk this is called "faith." as a wise christian writer once said "faith is the direction your feet start movin' in when you know that you are loved."
the first small group that got up and went with jesus got tagged "apostles," from a greek word that means "those sent out." because they went with jesus, he blessed and sent them to carry on in his way of living and to welcome others to do the same. the invitation is still stands... apostles are regular people who hear god calling and decide to answer. led by the spirit, we live kingdom (life centered in god through christ). these are exciting times we are living in. god is very busy, and we have a role to play in what god is doing in the world, as artisans of god's new way to be in the world (kingdom).
apostles is about following god in real life within our neighborhood and community. we are commited to serving God in our city of seattle and in our neighborhood of fremont. Our particular gifts for mission center around monastic community, the creative arts and support for the arts as core means of our spiritual expression... We feel called to curate arts and foster community because because god as the creator is the source of all human creativity, and God (in the three persons of the trinity) is the source of all relationality and community, so as we are creative and help others to be creative, we are reflecting the image of God the creator (imago dei), and as we are communal, and foster community life in our neighborhood, we are reflecting the communal life of God (as father, son and holy spirit).
so if you feel god is calling you (god is). if you think this is crazy (it is). if you believe that following might somehow be beautiful (it will be).
christ centered life is crazy beautiful. crazy, because it is shaped like a cross, and you'll have to lose your life in order to find it. beautiful, because the way is blessed, the company is pretty decent, and the life is abundant and off the hook rich. so when you are so moved (by what god in christ is offering you) join us in following and get crazy beautiful too.
